Its long, rifled barrel and solid stock give it superior accuracy when compared to the SMG, the carbine, or the handgun; for example, the C7 (the Canadian designation for the M-16) has a specified effective range of 400-500 metres, although such ranges are probably academic under realistic combat conditions (and it should be noted that on the firing range, their useful range is said to be more like 200 metres).
